Dr. Don C. Cathcart received an EdD in
mathematics education from Indiana University
(1975) where his mentors were Dr. Jerry McIntosh, Dr. Dan Maki, and Dr. Maynard
Thompson. While at Indiana University, he worked under Maki and Thompson as graduate
assistant in their pioneering Mathematical Models and Applications course. Cathcart completed an MA in mathematics at San Diego State University (1966), a BA in
mathematics at the University of Hawaii
(1960), and an AA at Chaffey College (1958). Dr. Cathcart
started his teaching career at Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii where he taught mathematics and coached track and
field. He taught at Palm
Springs High School in California and at James Madison
University in Virgina before coming to Salisbury University in 1971. Although his primary teaching interests
are in the areas of mathematical modeling and mathematics for elementary
school teachers, Cathcart has recently taught such
courses as operations research, calculus, linear algebra, and computer
graphics. Although he retired in 2008, he has continued to teach on a
part-time basis. In addition to serving as chair of the Department of
Mathematics for four years, Cathcart served as
interim dean of the Henson School of Science and Technology for two and
one-half years, and as interim provost of the
university for three years. He also was SU's track
and cross country coach for several years.
