Common name: Earwig

Order name: Dermaptera (derma, skin; ptera wings)

Earwigs are mainly nocturnal (active at night) in habit.  During the day they will hide in cracks, crevices, under bark, and under debris.

They feed mainly on dead and decaying vegetable matter, but some will feed on living plants and a few are predaceous.

A common superstition about these insects enters people's ears.
