*Ezra Jack Keats

Among the many sites devoted to classic authors of children's books, one of the best conceived is the virtual exhibit of Ezra Jack Keats. The exhibit includes dummies, typescripts, and original illustrations from seven of the "Peter" books (including The Snowy Day 1962, Whistle for Willie 1964, and Peter's Chair 1967) along with a biography of Keats. The site provides interesting historical information and more importantly it presents the process and ideas which go into the creation of a picturebook. The Section of the website entitled "The Making of a Keats Picture Book" presents a nice introduction to the book-making process and provides a context for the archival documents from the Peter books. http://www.lib.usm.edu/~degrum/keats/main.html
