Consider the case of Lisa and Jack Nash, who decided to have another child, Adam, in order to cure their first child, Molly, of Franconia's Anemia. In doing so answer the following two questions: first, should the parents have used pre-implantation screening to determine which embryo would be given the possibility of birth; second, should the parents have allowed the birth of their infant son to be tied so directly to the treatment and curing of his sibling?
In working out your answer use either a utilitarian or deontological approach to determine the most praiseworthy course of action. In doing so, you may want to consider whether the action you recommend is obligatory or superrogatory. Keep in mind that not only which course of action you recommend but also why it is recommended is crucial. Also keep in mind that both a utilitarian and a Kantian can end up recommending the same course of action but for different reasons.
In the last part of your paper, please reflect on why you chose one account of the good over the other--why you argued either as a Kantian or a Utilitarian. In doing so, try to point out the strengths and weaknesses of each position.
