Astronomy 108

The Astounding Cosmos

The majesty of the sky is an alluring obsession. There is no resisting the animal urge to explore its jewels and hunt down its fascinating treasures. We we will discover as Einstein did before us that; "The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible."

“Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World."
-Inscription on Columbus' caravels

flareblueflaretealWhen we look up through the window of the sky, we see objects of rare beauty, stunning diversity, and wondrous charm. The great journey among these jewels in the heavens is an assault on the senses and mind. I am here to guide you through these alluring realms of space and time. Along the way I hope to instill in you a sense of your place in space and a feeling of great adventures in astronomy. Discovery, observation, and scientific thought are the tools that we will use to set forth upon the universe.

Astronomy Lecture Notes: These are the notes and materials I expect to cover during the semester. These notes are provided for your studying pleasure, but they are *not* meant to replace the in class lecture or astronomy laboratory.

Homework Unit Assignments: There will be periodically assigned homework throughout the semester. You can find a copy of the current assignment sheets for the chapters in the textbook here. There will be roughly four assignment sheets during the semester with homework problems assigned, due dates, and the next upcoming exam.

Astronomy Class Presentations: During the semester you will see a number of presentations that follow along with the lecture material. I am making an effort to make these available to review. These pages may take some time to load because of their graphical nature.

Exam Reviews: During the semester  I will post exam reviews that will help guide you in your study efforts. These reviews are *not* meant to replace your own studying, nor do they imply what *will* or *will not* be on the tests. Study your notes, work example problems, and start over. Only use the test review as a reminder of what could be on the exam material.
