It is easy to get zero credit for certain problems in Calculus I,  if you omit the first step. Here are examples:

-- In preparing for Calculus I, fail to learn algebra and trigonometry.

-- In logarithmic differentiation, fail to take the logarithm of both sides of the equation.
-- In computing a derivative of  f(x) using the definition, fail to compute  f(s).
