I study science in controversies in which there are competing
claimants for the laurels of cultural authority. As a historian I have
particularly focused on the late nineteenth century. So for instance, I have
explored
- Victorian efforts to reconcile the first chapters of Genesis with the
evolutionary history of earth gradually uncovered by geologists and
biologists
- controversies over the introduction of vivisection as a research tool
at traditionally religious universities.
- debates between scientific and sentimental defenders of wild birds.
- reinterpretations of the religious argument from design in light of
Darwin's explanation of how organisms became adapted to their environment.
I am also interested in contemporary developments in similar controversies. A
list of some of my publications and presentations is included at the end
of my C.V.
