I've taught a wide range of courses for the Honors program and the Philosophy Department - see links to current teaching below. I enjoy my reputation as a tough professor who students generally enjoy taking - see my RateMyProfessors reviews. As I noted to my Critical thinking students, I didn't even write all of them!

I study science in controversies in which there are competing claimants for the laurels of cultural authority. As a historian I have particularly focused on the late nineteenth century. So for instance, I have explored

• Victorian efforts to reconcile the first chapters of Genesis with the evolutionary history of earth gradually uncovered by geologists and biologists.
• controversies over the introduction of vivisection as a research tool at traditionally religious universities.
• discussions of the nature of knowledge and our knowledge of nature at the Metaphysical Society (1869-1880).
• reinterpretations of the religious argument from design in light of Darwin's explanation of how organisms became adapted to their environment.

I am also interested in contemporary developments in twenty-first century controversies, particularly in debates over climate change and the genetic modification of humans and other organisms.
