Lab Assignment #1: The Basics
Writing for the World Wide Web

The Assignment
For our first lab, you will learn how to create a basic web page, find it on a server, and make it available to read on the World Wide Web.

Please do all of the tasks listed in the table below.  And remember: you will be graded only on the technical aspects of your web pages, not their rhetorical sophistication.

 
Task Hint Sample
Open a new blank page in Expression Web. If you have a blank welcome page, you can use that.  If not, create a new one.  
Write 100-200 words worth of text. On anything you like.  
Use three different fonts.  Common (and popular) fonts are Arial and Times New Roman. Fonts are on the toolbar up top.  
Use four different font sizes. Fonts are on the toolbar up top.  
Use at least two bolds and two italics.  And no underlines! Toolbar.  
Use three different colors (black plus two more). Toolbar.  
Make at least two lists, one numbered and the other bulleted. Toolbar.  
Use at least two levels on indentation. Toolbar.  
Save your page.  Save it in your htdocs folder on your "P" drive.  Name it welcome.htm If you already have a website that you don't want to lose, name it something else.  
Figure out your web page's address. It should be: http://students.salisbury.edu/~yourusername  
E-mail me your web page's address.
