Lab Assignment #6: Site Aesthetics
Writing for the World Wide Web

The Assignment
For our sixth and final lab, you will learn apply some of the principles of good graphic design to your site.

Please do all of the tasks listed in the table below.  And remember: you will be graded only on the technical aspects of your web pages, not their rhetorical sophistication.

Task Hint Sample
Begin by opening your site through Expression Web.  From now on, whenever you work on your sites, you should always open them by using the Site -- Open Site command in Expression Web. Site -- Open Site -- P drive -- htdocs -- Open.  You may need to browse for your P drive and htdocs folder the first time you do this.
Design two different looks for your website.  Each look must include five pages: a homepage, two first level pages, and two second level pages. Each version of your site can contain the same content. Consider sketching out your site on paper before you get started.
Design at least two navigation bars for your pages.  One that would fit on the left side of a page, and one that would fit on the top of a page. Consider using the full addresses of your links in your navigation bar.  That way you can copy and paste it into different pages with ease.
Use the principles of good design to make good-looking sites.  Use the principles of contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity, and unity to make your sites look good.  Also, remember to use color wisely. Think about establishing a basic theme first, then make minor variations to differentiate the different levels of the site. SU Website:
