Evaluation Procedures

There will be three exams and a comprehensive final along with weekly homework assignments and several quizzes to be announced. On all problems, you must show your work. No work, no credit (even for correct answers). This applies to exams as well. In general, there will be no make up exams. The final grade for the course will be calculated in this fashion: Homework, Quizzes, Lab Work 30%, Tests 50%, Final 20%. If your grade on the final exam is higher than on any of your other test scores it will replace the lowest test score.

The Calculus Readiness Program (CRP)

Description: The CRP is a mandatory program that supplements all MATH 201 courses. The program’s purpose is to help students refresh and maintain precalculus skills necessary for success in MATH 201 and subsequent courses. The program consists of weekly modules that students access via the Calculus Readiness Program MyClasses site. All students are required to pass a comprehensive Gateway Assessment by Friday, October 6th. Active and regular participation in the program is required of all students enrolled in MATH 201 until they have met this requirement. (NOTE: CRP participation is optional for students who score an 85% or better on their first Gateway Assessment attempt but are still encouraged to utilize the CRP materials.)

Calculus Readiness Gateway Assessment: In order to successfully earn a C or better in MATH 201, students are required to pass a comprehensive Gateway Assessment with a score of 85% or higher by Friday, October 6th. The assessment will be administered via students’ MyClasses accounts and must be taken using a campus computer. All MATH 201 students will take the Gateway Assessment on Friday, September 1st during their regularly scheduled class meeting. From Tuesday, September 5th to Friday, October 6th, students can take the Gateway Assessment in Henson 153 during various scheduled times each week; please refer to the Calculus Readiness MyClasses page for these specific times. The Gateway Assessment will be proctored and offered on a first come, first served basis since there are a limited number of computers in the lab. Student’s must show student ID to attempt the assessment. Students can attempt the assessment as many times as necessary and are encouraged to complete the CRP requirement as early in the semester as possible. Students who do not show sufficient competence on the Gateway Assessment will be encouraged to withdraw by Friday, October 13th but no later than Friday, November 3rd (the last day to drop with a grade of W).

Math Emporium Tutors: The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers free, drop-in tutoring for Calculus Readiness topics. The Math Emporium tutors are available at scheduled times each week in GAC 201.

MATH 140 Alternative: A section of MATH 140 (College Algebra and Trigonometry) will run the second half of the semester, during the 7 Week 2 Session, for those students who choose to withdraw from MATH 201. The course will begin on Wednesday, October 18th. Students wanting to enroll in this accelerated course should contact Dr. Holdai at vxholdai@salisbury.edu as soon as possible.
