Class Policies

Academic Integrity: We should work together as an intellectual community with high standards of academic integrity and respect for each other. You are encouraged to work together and form study groups outside of class. You are expected to participate in class, ask questions, provide your own insights, etc. Collaboration on homework assignments can be beneficial, but make sure that the collaboration is genuine, that all parties are contributing and that, in particular you understand and could reproduce independently any homework you turn in. Also, treat your peers and yourselves with respect and be certain to give credit where credit is due. Homework assignments that were completed collaboratively must acknowledge this and your narratives should make clear the roles played by all of the collaborators. Collaboration on exams is strictly prohibited and would, in the unlikely event that it occurred, be considered a breach of the university's academic integrity policy and, if discovered, treated as such.

Exams: There will be periodic in class exams (3 - 5). The exam dates and material covered by them will be announced in class. It is the student's responsibility to find out what announcements he/she missed by coming late, leaving early, or missing class. There will also be a final exam during the exam period.

Attendance: IS MANDATORY. 3 points will be added to the final test average of any student who has missed fewer than 2 classes.

Quizzes: The number of and frequency of quizzes will depend on the general performance of the class. Most likely there will be one each week. You will receive a quiz grade of 0 for any missed quiz and, so that missing up to two classes will not be penalized, nor rewarded, I will drop at least the lowest two quiz grades.

Homework: See attached homework statement

Grading Policy: All tests will be graded on a 100 point scale. The final grade will consist of a weighted average of the test grades, the final exam grade, your quiz grades and your homework grade. I do not give make up tests. If you miss a test all bets are off and I assign a grade on the basis of the information I have, in whatever manner I feel is fair and consistent. If a test is missed for insufficient cause the grade is zero and will be used in your average! My grading scale is as follows:

92 - 100A
80 - 91B
68 - 79C
60 - 67D
below 60F

I truncate averages to the greatest integer less than the average and reserve the right to raise any grade on the basis of class participation or extenuating circumstances. However, I cannot assign a C or better to a student who has not demonstrated competency in the course material sufficient to have a good shot of success in MATH 160, regardless of whether or not the student plans to take Math 160.

Class Format: Primarily informal lectures with questions encouraged at appropriate times. Please try to come to class on time! If for some reason you must be late, enter quietly and try to avoid disturbing the lecture. Unless you notify me of a pending family or personal emergency which necessitates your remaining connected, all cell phones should be turned to silent (or off unless you are using them as calculators) either before entering or immediately upon entering the classroom. Cell phones which ring or vibrate noticibly during class may be confiscated. Any person with a cell phone that is on during a quiz or test is subject to being reported as being in violation of the university policy on Academic Integrity.

Office Hours: Are posted on my schedule. I welcome visits from students to my office at any time you can catch me. You are not limited to my office hours and my schedule should give you clues about when to best catch me. Senate meetings are every other Tuesday and department meetings are once a month in no regular fashion. On the alternate weeks I may be available.

Another source of help: There is free tutoring available thorugh the department for this course.
