GUIDELINES FOR
PAPER
FREN 316 / 317
The research papers ask you to
research, analyze and interpret an event or an individual with the broad
historical context focusing on the products, practices and perspectives of the
era. You will pose a research question
and find information to support your conclusion(s). The papers from class will allow you to
explore a subject in more depth than we can pursue in class or to explore a new
topic that deals with French culture and civilization from the 16th
or 17th century (FREN 316) or the 18th or 19th
century (FREN 317). Papers will be
graded primarily on content and relevancy to the course. Organization, clarity of thought and
mechanics will also be considered. See
rubric BEFORE you begin writing.
You will initially submit a proposal
of one page which will identify your topic (see syllabus for dates). List AT LEAST THREE SOURCES
IN FRENCH and any number of sources in English in a preliminary bibliography,
indicating the language of the source.
You may have a maximum of 3
sources from the internet. A variety
of sources must be used. I must receive
your proposal and approve the content in order for your paper to receive a
passing grade. I will provide feedback
to you regarding what you have submitted.
A progress report is due when indicated in the syllabus. There you will include your final topic and
title of the paper, your final bibliography and describe the progress you have
made in your research and writing. As
you create a first draft, you are encouraged to ask 2 people in the class to read it for you, using
the rubric to guide their comments. They
should circle (NOT change / correct) anything that is unclear or perhaps
grammatically incorrect. PAPERS MUST BE
TURNED IN AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS ON OR BEFORE THE DUE DATE LISTED IN THE
SYLLABUS. LATE PAPERS WILL NOT BE
ACCEPTED.
Your topic should be fairly focused i.e.
“The Foreign Policy of Louis XIV” versus “Louis XIV.” You need to be able to develop your topic
well, within the page limit provided.
See syllabus for possible topics.
The paper must be typed, double spaced
with 1” margins on all sides. The body
of the paper should be 4-5 pages. This
does NOT include the cover page, illustrations or the bibliography. Please use Times New Roman, 12 font.
The cover page should include the title,
your name, the date and FREN 316 or 317.
It may include a picture or a graphic.
Notes may be done within the text or as
endnotes. Be consistent in the format
that you choose.
Be sure to cite quotations
appropriately. If you quote from a
source in English, you may use English, particularly if it is a long
citation. If your quotation runs for
more than four lines of text, you should use a BLOCK quote (i.e. tab in once
and single space lines within the block).
Students will be asked to have their papers reviewed electronically to
detect plagiarism.
Bibliographic format may be similar to
what you have used in English 103. Be
consistent across sources and provide all necessary information. Be aware that everything on the internet may
NOT be reliable information. Remember
that A MINIMUM OF THREE SOURCES MUST BE IN FRENCH. The more sources that you have in French, the
less translation you have to do.
