PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to give students an introduction into Web development through the use of XHTML and JavaScript.

 

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the course are as follows:

To learn the basic XHTML tags used in web design as well as develop web forms, links, and graphics.  To learn the basics of JavaScript and how it is used in Web page forms, and dynamic pages. 

 

 

PROCEDURES: Classroom work will consist of discussion, quizzes demonstration and student participation. All tests and exams are comprehensive and are to be taken on the assigned date, unless special permission is given by the instructor in cases of emergency. Makeup exams are given only to those students who have an absence that has been approved by the instructor. Projects, lab assignments and homework are due at the beginning of the class on the date they are due. No work will be accepted late.  If you must leave the class early for a legitimate reason, please inform the instructor before the class starts.  Leaving a class early without notifying the instructor is the same as an absence.   If an emergency arises that you must leave the class (even if you return), please inform the instructor at the end of the class. Food and drinks are not to be taken into the classroom or labs.

 

GRADING: The final grade is based on 100 possible points.

A 90 -100

B 80 - 89

C 70 - 79

D 60 - 69

F 0 - 59

 

Tests (mid-term and final)      35%

Quizzes Labs & Lab Assignments       45%  

Web Page Project                   20%

 

All lab assignments and projects must be done with XHTML and JavaScript.  They must be done without the use of  web page software development tools such as dreamweaver, composer etc.

 

Labs are a vital part of the course and every student is expected to be at every lab.  The lab assignments make up a significant portion of the course grade.

 

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is a vital part of the learning experience and each student is expected to be present each time. After three un-excused absences, .5 will be deducted from the final grade for each un-excused absence.

 

NEITHER Cell phones NOR MP3 players (or other audio/visual equipment) are to be used during class or lab time.  (No calls and no text messaging during class) Silence your phone for all classes and labs

 

Web Page Project

 

Each student is required to produce a web site consisting of not less than four web pages each of which are developed by HTML and Java Script.  No web page development software is to be used.  The Web site can be one for an existing company, volunteer organization (such as churches, non-profit organizations etc.) or for a company or organization of your imagination.  Every page must include links to other pages of the site and include pictures.  In addition some pages should include links to other sites, forms, tables, outlines and animations.  One page should include forms that can be filled in by the user as well as menu items that when clicked will add information to the site.   More details of the project and due dates will be given in class.
