PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to give students an understanding of the organization and internal behavior of a microcomputer. The inner workings of a digital computer system as well as the architecture of selected computer chips will be studied. A lab is provided to give practical examples of the concepts studied in class.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of the course are as follows:
1. To learn Boolean Algebra and digital logic
2. To gain lab experience in digital electronics.
3. To work with combinational and learn components of the Arithmetic Logic Unit
4. To work with sequential logic and learn memory components
5. To be briefly introduced to assembly language techniques.
6. To learn the
components of a microprocessor by studying the 8080 and then the later Intel
family of microprocessors.
PROCEDURES: Classroom work will consist of discussion, demonstration and
student participation. Scheduled homework is to be completed prior to the class
time for which it is assigned. No homework will be accepted late. Lecture notes
are given in class; however, the
student is expected to take notes and copy examples given in class. All tests
are to be taken on the assigned date, unless special permission is given by the
instructor in cases of emergency.
Makeup exams are given only to those students who have an absence that has been
approved by the instructor. All Lab work is to be completed on the day that the lab is scheduled. Any pre-lab activities
are to be completed before that particular lab.
NEITHER Cell phones NOR MP3 players (or other audio/visual equipment) are to be used during class or lab time. (No calls and no text messaging during class) Silence your phones for all classes. If you must leave the class early for a legitimate reason, please inform the instructor before the class starts. Leaving a class early without notifying the instructor is the same as an absence. If an emergency arises that you must leave the class (even if you return), please inform the instructor at the end of the class. Food and drinks are not to be taken into the classroom or labs.
GRADING:
A. 65% of the final grade will be determined by the average of tests
B. 15% of the final grade will be determined by the project, quizzes and homework.
C.
20% of the final grade will be determined by the lab work.

class are contained in the Class Notes book which is to be purchased.
The 15% Homework, quizzes and project grade is broken down in the following manner.
8 % given for homework, pop quizzes and class participation
7 % for project
PROJECT
You are to create a circuit of some sort on
Logisim. The output must be
connected to a seven segment display.
You need to include both the circuit, submitted to the instructor through
e-mail, and a hard copy which shows ALL your work.
The hardcopy should be professional clearly indicating the purpose of the
circuit, (what it does) and any directions on how to implement it. (Activated by
clock, button, any input or switches that need to be turned on etc.)
