Math 520

Final project requirements

During this course you will be developing and gathering materials for your students.  I envision the following types of materials:

Applets that illustrate a concept

A mini activity (takes approximately 10 minutes) with student handout

A long activity (takes 1-2 class periods) with accompanying student handouts

An extended activity (takes at least 2 class periods) with accompanying student handouts

A “warm-up” task that you could use to start a class

Your final project (portfolio) should include a minimum of…

1 extended activity (takes more than one class period) with accompanying student handouts

1 long activity (takes one class period) with accompanying student handouts

3 mini activities( take ~10 minutes) with student handout ( to come from three different content standards)

1 applet for each content standard we cover (print out a picture of the applet and briefly describe what it does)

1 “warm-up” task for each standard we cover

Each of these should have the following addressed:

Where does it fit in your scope/sequence?

What NCTM standard “bullet” does it address?

It is classroom ready ( meaning it is so READY that you could photocopy the worksheets tomorrow or present the activity to your students tomorrow)

Your final project (portfolio) should also include…

A copy of each of your journals

A reflection ( at least 3 paragraphs) of what you gained from the course.

This collection of materials and accompanying explanations will look different for many of you.  This is fine.  I do not need a “standard” lesson plan.  I just want you to give me the materials in your typical manner.

You are welcome to adapt any of the activities we do in class for your classroom.  You are also welcome to find materials on the web and adapt them for your classroom.  Just cite your sources.

Due date and presentation

This is due the final day of class (finals week) during which you will present it to the class in a 10-minute session. This presentation should include an overview of your collection, where the materials fit into your scope/sequence, and a brief walk-thru of some of the materials (as time allows).
