3. Read articles # 2 and #1.  Come up with a three-sentence description of each.

 

4.  Make copies of the articles.

and check out some materials that reflect the Number and Operations standard.  In the following weeks we will look at other standards so just make this one the focus this week.  A good activity can address multiple standards. 

 

After looking around the sites, find at least one activity (short or long) that you would be willing to try in your classroom over the next week.  Make plans to do so and implement the activity.  You will report back next week on how it went.

·        When do the authors say that graphing calculators should be used?

·        How should one balance paper and pencil work with calculator work?

·        Do articles 5,12 (written in 1992) make any predictions about the future of technology that ring true?

·          Do articles 5,12 (written in 1992) make any predictions about the future of technology that do not ring true?

·        What does CAS stand for?

·        In article 5, the authors cite the use of the “replay” function.  We used this feature when we did the interest problem- but is was not called “replay”.  What kinds of questions can we now ask that use this feature that would have taken too long before?

                        Create a column that contains the population density (recall this is land area/population)

                        Create a graph that contains the population as the x-value and the population density as the y-value

4. Read articles #10 with the following questions in mind.  These questions will lead our class discussion next Thursday.

·        Can you come up with an example of a meaningless use of a diagram?

·        Can you come up with an example in which a diagram may speak “a thousand words”

·        What is the difference between a diagram, picture, and drawing?  Can you give an example of each?

·        How often do you use diagrams in your classroom?
