Out
of class work: In order to participate in a meaningful way in class discussion
and to benefit from them, there will be required readings. There will also be opportunities for
individuals to work on understanding some mathematics that they will share with
the entire class.
Journals: These will be submitted to me about once
every two weeks. Some of these will be
directed journal entries, others will be reflections
on how your learning is going. They will not be accepted late,
late entries will earn a 0. When
appropriate you may be asked to write some of your journals by hand, otherwise,
they must be typed.
Exams: There will be no in-class exams, instead there will be projects that will take the place of the traditional midterm and final exam.
Final exam: As mentioned above, there is no traditional final exam. Instead, there is a final project that will
be shared with the entire class.
Class
Participation and Attendance: Attendance is highly suggested, your daily involvement is an
important part of the class- for your learning and the other students’
learning. If you miss class it is your responsibility to
find out what material was covered and to make yourself aware of any announcements.
Course Projects: You will be investigate some mathematics topic in depth and
present your results in some creative format.
This could be a paper with a class presentation, a journal article, a
dramatic presentation – such as a skit, a poem with a paper, or whatever other
format you wish to use in order to share your mathematical musings with
me.
Grading
Policy:
Course grades will be assigned as follows: A= 90% or higher, B= 80-89%, C=
70-79%, D= 60-69%. Your performance will
