Welcome to Teach or Perish Country Club

Keith J. Conners, Ph.D.

In the late fall of 1990, Ernest Boyer spoke to the annual meeting of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities in Boca Raton, Florida.  He drew spontaneous applause when he spoke about the changing priorities of the professoriate that he had outlined in his just-published text, Scholarship Reconsidered.  The line which brought the loudest response was, "I long for the day when the slogan of higher education is no longer 'publish or perish,' but 'teach or perish'."
