Expectations: This is a college class and it is my expectation that the students are adults and will act as professionals. Most of the homework will be in WebAssign, it will be up to you to use this tool to help you learn, not to game the system. Please see the Entry Slip and Summary assignments. I will help you whenever you ask for help and I very much want you to succeed. But ultimately your success in this - or any other class - lies on your shoulders. Calculus is a challenging course for many students. However, if you have learned the prerequisite material; you do the work assigned; and you get help as soon as you have any difficulty there is no reason that you should not be successful.
Tutoring: There is free walk-in tutoring available for this class. Please see: the tutoring program site for details.
Exams: There will be periodic in class exams (3 or 4). The exam dates and material covered by them will be announced in class. It is the student's responsibility to find out what announcements he/she missed by coming late, leaving early, or missing class. There will also be a final exam during the exam period.
Attendance: IS MANDATORY. 2 points will be added to the final averages of students who miss fewer than 2 classes.
Homework: See attached homework statement. I will grade summaries using a check system and will convert this to a score of -1 to 2. I will report your homework scores and overall averages at midterm and again at the end of the term. The summary score will be added to your test, quiz and WebAssign score average.
Quizzes: There will be periodic unannounced quizzes on material for which homework has been assigned. These will be graded on a 10 point scale. Your quiz average will consist of 10 times the average score on your quizzes with the lowest two scores dropped.
Grading Policy: All tests will be graded on a 100 point scale. The final grade will consist of a weighted average of the test grades, the final exam grade, your quiz average, and your WebAssign average, to which I will add your summary grade and your attendance grade. I do not give make up tests. If you miss a test all bets are off and I assign a grade on the basis of the information I have, in whatever manner I feel is fair and consistent. If a test is missed for insufficient cause the grade is zero and will be used in your average! If you miss a quiz that will be used as the quiz I drop. If you miss two quizzes...I will again, make up your grade in a manner that I feel is fair and consistent. If you miss more than 2 quizzes, you need to discuss your attendance issues with me. My grading scale is as follows:
92 - 100 | A |
80 - 91 | B |
68 - 79 | C |
60 - 67 | D |
below 60 | F |
I generally truncate averages. All grades are subjective within this framework. I reserve the right to raise any student's grade in the unlikely event that I am convinced that it does not adequately represent the student's performance.
Class Format: Primarily informal lectures with questions encouraged at appropriate times. Please try to come to class on time! If for some reason you must be late, enter quietly and try to avoid disturbing the lecture.
