COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will introduce you to the important features and characteristics of the advertising business. We will explore historical, institutional, economic and aesthetic dimensions of advertising expression and personal, political, social and cultural dimensions of reading and interpreting advertisements. It will give you an overview of how the advertising industry operates, what ad people do, and some of the effects of advertising on industry and society. The course will focus on the study and practice of researching, planning and creating advertisements and advertising techniques such as campaign planning, copywriting and media design. You will practice the evaluation and criticism of advertising, and seek to better understand the roles that advertising plays in contemporary culture.
