Format possibilities:
I. True-False rewrites. Identify the statement as True or False. Rewrite false statements to make them accurate (beyond just adding "not"). Add another sentence or clause to each true statement that begins, "however, I would point out that . . . "
Examples:
1. The hidden curriculum includes top secret textbooks for students studying to become spies.
2. English 101 is part of the core curriculum at SSU.
II. Identify relationships among clusters of terms and explain in a sentence or two.
Example: Describe how any two of the following terms are related. "dumbing down . . . Texas and California effect . . . state adoption . . . readability"
III. Essay section. You may be given the option of supplying the thesis statement and a brief outline in lieu of a full essay response for one or more questions.
There will be choices among essay questions.
Essay questions may resemble discussion questions which follow each chapter, or may ask you to integrate material covered in class with information in the text. Current events related to education - e.g., headline news from daily newspapers, newsmagazines, or television newsmagazines -- may also be considered for inclusion in essay questions.
Note: Exam #1 will cover chapters 5-6-7-8 plus class discussions which occur during the first three weeks of the semester. As some students may not have received their placements in time, no questions will be dependent upon school-based observations or participation.
We will reserve class time to review or clarify any information from the text which you find confusing or complicated, but it will be your responsibility to ask about specific points, concepts, or issues.
