MATH 100 College Algebra: A Modeling Approach

Fall 2008

Text:  College Algebra through Functions and Models, Scott R. Herriott, Brooks/Cole, 2005

In this course, we hope to make math interesting, accessible, and applicable in everyday life. The authors provide algebraic modeling concepts and solutions in non-threatening, easy-to-understand language with numerous step-by-step examples to illustrate ideas. Whether you are going on to study business administration, early childhood education, graphic arts, criminal justice, or something else, you will discover that the practical applications of mathematical modeling will be useful well after you have finished this course.  You will learn to use a combination of algebraic, graphical, and numerical methods... You will develop an understanding of  some mathematical concepts and learn how to apply in solving realistic problems, and not merely perform operations mechanically.  You will learn to justify your reasoning and  interpret your results, not just obtain answers.  In the latter part of the course, you will use a calculator as a tool for answering the kinds of questions that arise.  You will increase your ability to think mathematically so that you can apply mathematics in many contexts.
